Web3 games company, Midnight, came out of hiding today, raising $7.5 million in a seed round led by Shima Capital. The round was also attended by well-known investors in blockchain games, including Forte, Snackclub, Overwolf, the founders of Illuvium gaming companies and investors from Woodstock Fund, FJ Labs, Bixin Ventures and others.
The company, founded in 2021, is led by CEO Steve Wade, a gaming business development entrepreneur and chief executive of video game publishing and development. It launched 45 online games, four game payment solutions and eight game portals.
Former Soundcloud CTO Stephen Spagnolo also co-founded Midnight. He has 30 years of experience in the gaming industry and has gone through two studios from bootstrap to exit as CEO and CTO across web, mobile, consoles and PC. Prior to Soundcloud, he was Senior Chief Technology Officer at mobile gaming company King and founder of Blue Tongue Entertainment (acquired by THQ) and free-to-play studio Twiitch (acquired by GREE).
Midnight’s top management also includes Chief Creative Officer Bill Roper, who has been a game designer for Diablo, Warcraft and StarCraft. Roper previously led the Marvel game franchise and was previously the chief creative officer of Improbable.
Its executive team includes acting chief product officer Chris Heatherley, former executive vice president of games for NBCUniversal and former general manager of Disney Mobile Games. He helped turn Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Jurassic World into multi-billion dollar franchises.
Head of game design Geoffrey Hunt is also on the executive team. He was the developer of commercially successful games such as Star Trek: Fleet Command as well as Game of War: Age of Fire.
The core team also includes art director Darren Pattenden, who has held senior positions at EA, Trion Worlds, Manticore and 2K Games; and Acting Chief Marketing Officer Anthony Gabriele, formerly head of marketing and general manager of SoundCloud and director of subscription marketing for Apple’s media and entertainment business.
The company is on a mission to create games with “timeless stories” and endless experiences that keep players coming back. Wade told Games Beat that Midnight creates free games with a Web3 “processing” system that ensures compatibility and a solid game economy. It is aimed at a wide range of audiences, both with and without cryptocurrency experience.
“While others are betting that fake ‘ownership’ and the associated economy will lead the masses to boring NFT-based games, we strongly believe that participation and the secondary market should be both meaningful and complementary to the stories. players,” said Wade Games. Beat. “Our games are meant to be fun without the NFT layer, and we’re targeting the widest range of gamers. It doesn’t matter if someone is crypto-native or not – they will find something for themselves at midnight.”
At Midnight, 60 employees are currently working on four games, including Legion, a 4X multiplayer online game (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Destroy); Next Protectors, a 2D pixelated action game; and At Your Service, a co-op co-op game.
The company is currently focusing on PC and console games, with mobile games coming later. It will also add a blockchain and NFT layer to games as needed.
