Anything Wayne Hennessy can do…
Ben Davis’ sharp punch flips Hossein Hosseini, who is just as good on the other end.

There will probably be quite a bit of ‘England must have been good to score six times against this team’ later on – that’s how stuff like that usually works – but it really was a very different team that Wales faced this morning. In fact, it’s more like a 2018 team that was so resilient in the face of such overwhelming odds.
What a twist from Monday.

So far, a little from Gareth Bale. He was very depressed and Wales need something from him – in fact, if they want to score, you suspect it must come from one of the those Bale moments.

Fantastic save Hennessy. Sincerely, truly excellent – Ezatolaha’s low spurt looks like all the money is heading into the bottom corner, only to have Hennsessy’s fingertips redirect it around the post. Perfect.

IRAN SUB: Azmoun out, Ansarifard out
Wales won’t be displeased to see his back…

Stu was right
Iran is indeed getting stronger by the minute and the odds seem to be getting clearer and clearer. Chris Mepham is the latest defender to make a critical block, this time when Taremi threatened the back post.
Someone smiles at you.

Azmoun was great. He’s played under 300 minutes for Bayer Leverkusen this season and, unsurprisingly, cramps are starting to bite him, but he’s caused Wales all sorts of trouble.
They patched it up and it’s still there – and Iran needs it.

SUBWALES: James replaces Wilson, Johnson replaces Roberts
The screw turns very hard. The attacking movement of the ball from the Iranians is only improving, and the Welsh defense is starting to look a little desperate.
In response, Rob Page went to his bench for two offensive substitutions – James and Johnson in Wales in search of a front foot.

Can you believe it?
Iran hit the post twice in a minute. First, Azmun breaks away and rattles against the tree. Then, as Wales falls to clear, Gholizadeh curls up against ANOTHER post from afar. An amazing sequence that somehow ends with Hennessy grabbing the ball and Wales surviving.

According to our reporters, this field was heavily, heavily watered at halftime. That might suit Iran because they certainly moved the ball better and more efficiently.

Glory to Kyeros
Considering what happened against England and the tense atmosphere around his players, as well as some of his press conferences, Carlos Queros put in a very respectable performance today.
Now they are back in motion – still 0:0.

HT: Wales 0 – 0 Iran
It’s nervous. Wales had the ball, Iran had a chance.

Azmun vs. Rawdon rumbles. This time, the forward simply runs a yard ahead in the penalty area and is inches away from a brilliant touch from the right half-space.
Rawdon also received an order for a wild attack on Taremi.

Wales attack starting to pick up?
Shortly before half-time, a good example of what we were hoping to see from Kieffer Moore: he receives a pass from the edge of the box and sends Harry Wilson into space. However, a good restoration of the Iranian defense negates this chance, and Wilson’s shot is saved for a corner.
However, Hosseini performed well in traffic and we didn’t get close to the first goal.

Joe Devine says:
I live with Joe Devine of Tifo during the tournament and he occasionally throws a pearl of wisdom across the living room. Here are his latest:
“Iran had significantly less possession, but they were much more dangerous. A reminder that possession of the ball does not guarantee anything.”

Azmun vs. Rodon
Sardar Azmoun has made huge strides and while they clearly don’t get along off the pitch, he and Mehdi Taremi look dangerous in tandem.
Azmoun seems to be putting a strain on the Wales defense in particular. He had just tested Joe Rodon’s pace and could have shot early in the half had it not been for one of the last tackles of the tournament from the Spurs’ loaned centre-back.

The reaction of Iranian football players to the anthem
Sina Semyan is from the Gol Bezan podcast and was one of the Iranian journalists who spoke with James Montagu for an article we published in The Athletic. Here is his reaction to the anthem:
It was heartbreaking. No doubt they were under pressure to sing the national anthem.
