USMNT final score against Wales: USA start Qatar World Cup campaign with draw after Gareth Bale late penalty

The United States marked their return to the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Wales to start their game in Group B. great goal by Tim Weah in the first half was later canceled due to penalty conversion by Gareth Bale at the end of the second half as the two sides shared points. It’s a draw that doesn’t seem like such a good thing considering the Americans looked very sharp in the first 45 minutes thanks to a brilliant ball from Christian Pulisic that helped the team to take the lead.

But the second half was a completely different story, as the Welsh jumped into the game and stymied Gregg Berhalter’s team. With less than 10 minutes left, Walker Zimmerman, who was playing well that day, carelessly fouled Bale in the penalty area and converted a penalty. Big saves were required from Turner that evening from Matt Turner and although he received part of Bale’s penalty, the shot was thrown too hard to be deflected. It may seem like a missed opportunity when three points would have made the Wales-Iran match almost a knockout. Instead, the Americans are licking their wounds and preparing for a decisive showdown with England on Black Friday at 2pm ET.

Here are some takeaways from the match:

Big wake up call in the second half

In Concacafe, a game like this would most likely be enough to score three points, but mistakes are punished when you’re at the biggest stage. It’s not a qualifier and all it took for Zimmerman was one sneaky tackle to ruin a great game when Bale hit a penalty into the net.

Bale was dispossessed late by Tyler Adams and Kellin Acosta kicked him to deny him a chance to score a clean goal. It goes to show that these moments can be both sides, but the biggest “what if” of this night depends on Gio Reina’s availability.

Back in full form for Borussia Dortmund, Reina’s directness could have made the difference late in the match when the United States were challenging forward. But Berhalter used Jordan Morris instead of Tim Weah as his last replacement. He told reporters after the match that Reina would be available to play England, suggesting that his status as a rookie was uncertain. Morris, who was on the field for about 11 minutes, didn’t have much time to make an impact. He only made three touches and failed to complete any of his crosses. The contribution was not good enough for his short time on the field.

Overall, USMNT is still in good shape to make it to the Round of 16, but they’ve made it harder. Even if England wins their matches, the United States will only need to improve Wales’ record against Iran to advance to the next stage, so it’s not all hopeless after this setback. If Wales somehow loses to Iran and England defeats the US, we can expect a win-win match to close out the group, at which point the USMNT will still be in control of its own destiny.

Pulisic should be healthy

Wales’ goal was to bring Pulisic to the ground so he couldn’t land. Somehow, he was officially fouled four times during the match, and for the most part, Wales’ plan worked. But when Josh Sargent headed the ball right in his path, and it allowed him to go to the center, Pulisic dribbled brilliantly and scored Weah, scoring the first goal of the game.

While his standard game leaves a lot to be desired, there aren’t many players in the national team capable of opening a game like Pulisic. He finished the match against Wales but was clearly suffering from persistent problems. Against England, he will need to get back to their back line, otherwise the chances of winning will drop significantly. It is worth monitoring his condition, because there are only four days left until the next game.

Oh captain, my captain

Tyler Adams was excellent. He was there every step of the way when the United States needed someone to stop games and keep an eye on Bale. He also made sure all his passes landed in the right place. Sometimes it’s easy to take Adams for granted because he’s such a consistent player, but in the World Cup and wearing a bandage at such a young age, his star shone brightest. Adams won three tackles and grabbed two interceptions to help protect his centre-backs. Having Tim Rome at his back made things easier, as Adams didn’t have to overstretch knowing someone could clear attacks.
