Adidas Originals launches its first collection of NFT digital wearables. The 16-piece limited edition marks the launch of a new category of adidas Originals products that the brand has dubbed “Virtual Gear”.

“We are setting a milestone in this new era of originality that undeniably serves the community, elevates the purveyors and collectors of an emerging style and culture, benefits value creators, and supports the diversity of self-expression and utility that blurs virtual worlds. allowed us all to explore,” said Erica Wycks-Sneid, vice president of adidas /// (Three Stripes Studio).

The release follows a teaser campaign with the adidas Discord community and this community is also central to the adidas strategy.

Next week, adidas will release the PFP Changer, allowing this first edition of the adidas Virtual Gear collection to be worn by PFP avatars from compatible collections, primarily Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club and Inhabitants.

However, while it was previously possible to “write” virtual clothing onto a PFP as a permanent add-on, the real change here is that the new PFP dress-up tool will allow users to change their PFP’s outfits just as they can with regular avatars like Ready. Player Me. versions.

In the future, expect other PFP and avatar communities to be integrated into a compatible system.

“With our community and ecosystem of creators at its core, adidas will explore every viable utility, platform and experience in Web3 to unlock new possibilities for our wearables, with a focus on tangible value and enduring value for our community members.” — Wikes-Sneid . added.

The community has been an integral part of the adidas Web3 strategy from the very beginning – in January, the NFT community was created with Prada and artist Zack Lieberman, who combined entries from 3,000 members into one giant NFT piece. Although it was auctioned off for charity, a percentage also went back to the 3,000 creators.

Owners of the adidas Originals: Capsule NFT Collection (24,280 pieces in total), which launched in May 2022, will receive a randomly selected item from the new Virtual Gear Collection for free. They won’t know which one, however, unless they decide to “burn” their NFT capsule — essentially replacing it with a piece from the Virtual Gear collection of digital wearables. FYI, they can also hold their pod without burning it and wait for phase 3…

For those who do not own the original adidas Originals: Capsule NFT, items from the Virtual Gear Collection will be available for purchase on the secondary market on Opensea.

All creative with adidas DNA, items in the Virtual Gear capsule include jackets or sweatshirts of a specific description with WALLRUNNER quilted jackets made from 3D layered shamrocks made from towels, PFD style inflatable down jackets (that’s a personal buoyancy device) and NEOBONE tops. inspired by the rubber outsole pattern of the adidas Superstar sneakers.

“As a brand, adidas has always been committed to exploring the edges of creativity and pushing the boundaries to find what goes beyond them,” said Nick Galway, senior vice president of creative direction at adidas Originals. “But Web3 offers our designers and staff a new opportunity to imagine and reimagine how our brand can be represented in the augmented and virtual worlds.

It should also be noted that the detail of wearable 3D devices is impressive. While accessories are generally easier to render, any 3D designer will tell you that materials like towels or anything more textured for that matter are notoriously difficult to make realistic.

Three of the 16 limited edition NFT wearable collections refer to adidas’ earliest Web3 partners, Bored Ape Yacht Club, GMoney and Punks Comics, highlighting their ongoing collaboration. BAYC features fluffy red balaclava sweatshirts and Punks Comic leather biker jackets. GMoney products are black down jackets. Each is branded with the insignia of both partners.

While Adidas hasn’t released numbers, these three NTF partnerships are the rarest of them all, with a red Bored Ape Yacht Club hoodie supposed to be the Web3 equivalent of the mythological Golden Fleece.
