Rockstar Games has stated that NFT and cryptocurrency can no longer be used on Grand Theft Auto V online servers.
Some online servers use NFTs and/or crypto tokens to signify ownership of unique items or exclusive access.
Along with completely Web3– native games built around NFTswe have also seen fan attempts to add NFTs and crypto tokens to popular online games such as Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. But Microsoft has moved to disallow web3 elements from minecraft this summer, and now Rockstar Games has done the same with its popular franchise.
Rockstar Games last week updated my website specify that fan-run servers for Grand Theft Auto V can no longer use cryptocurrencies or cryptoassets, in particular NFTs.
Fans have been using so-called “role-playing servers” for Grand Theft Auto V for years, and they’re popular on streaming platforms like Twitch. On role-playing servers that require a fan-made modification of a PC game, players take on the role of normally non-playable characters (NPCs) in the world and interact with each other online.
Some of these servers have implemented NFTs and crypto tokens to give players ownership of unique assets in the persistent game world, or provide certain exclusive benefits for regular players. In some examples, Grand Theft Auto V servers offered special vehicles and weapons presented as NFT assets.
Popular rapper Durk “Lil Durk” Banks recently launched his own GTA RPG server with NFT assets called Trenches. Saturday organization Lil Durk Only the Family Gaming tweeted that he would take the server offline after being contacted by legal counsel for Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive.
“We have no choice but to comply with their demands as we intend to do the right thing with Take-Two and Rockstar,” the statement said. “We will work with them to find a peaceful solution to this issue.”
Other popular modified servers may cross the same line. In September, decipher wrote about Brazilian gaming organization Loud and its Web3-focused parent company Spacecaps. The firm’s Snackclub division operates a GTA server called Cidade Alta that uses NFT for exclusive items. Another company, MyMetaverse, runs a NFT-enabled GTA server based on Enjin’s Enjinverse platform. Dotted.
decipher contacted representatives from Spacecaps, Enjin and Rockstar Games, but did not receive an immediate response from any of them.
NFT is a blockchain token that can be used to represent ownership of a unique item such as video game game assets, artwork, and collectibles. This technology can be used in games where users own and can trade or sell their own assets such as Axi Infinitygenerating over $4 billion in NFT trading volume.but fought since its explosive success last year.
In July, Microsoft and developer Mojang announced plans ban NFTs and crypto tokens from fan-made Minecraft servers, as well as ban unofficial Web3 derivative projects that use Minecraft assets. In a release, the companies said that NFT scarcity models that limit access or options for asset owners are against the “spirit of Minecraft.”
The actual ban has not yet entered into force. This move influenced the development NFT Worldsan unofficial derivative game built on the scalable Ethereum network, Polygon. Instead, the game will be developed on its own platform and not based on Minecraft.
Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V have been huge hits. These are the two best-selling games of all time: Minecraft has sold 238 million copies (as of April 2021) and Grand Theft Auto V, with 170 million copies sold (from this month).
Interestingly, Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive is actually interested in NFTs and crypto technologies. The firm acquired mobile/casual games studio Zynga earlier this year with plans to jointly explore the “possibilities of Web3”, as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in January. In addition, Take-Two recently invested in the game studio NFT Horizon.
Popular PC gaming market and Steam platform also prohibited NFTs and crypto-elements from inclusion in games. However, the competing platform Epic Games Store adopted web3 games which conform to its rules and laws, with titles such as Block Party Blancos as well as Star Atlas showcase launch.
