PlayStation cracks down on the shovel

PlayStation is finally taking steps to clean up the massive amount of shovels in its store. The company sent out a letter to developers informing them that shovels, trophy farming games, reskinned games, and games that aren’t actually games will be delisted and removed. Developers who list this material for sale may also be prevented from releasing new products in the future.

An anonymous source sent DexDotExe a copy of the letter, which lists all possible violations of the new rules. It also explains how Sony will review and enforce the new status quo.

If developers break the new rules and try to sell what Sony considers to be “spam” or “duplicate” content, Sony reserves the right to remove it or even close the PlayStation Partners developer account.

Shovelware isn’t just a PlayStation problem

It’s great to see Sony taking steps to deal with content like this, even if it’s not exactly a new issue. Valve, for example, is still struggling with this. Just a few years ago, the Steam Asset Swap hype reached its peak. You couldn’t browse YouTube without seeing a commentator or journalist talking about the absolute flood of games on the Steam store.

In one or two cases, these videos have led to legal action.

I’m not opposed to this idea, to be honest. What if some independent developer wants to build a game using Unity assets and sell it for a dollar? Well, they have more power. I’m sure some of them are learning how to make games as they go. Should they want to earn some money at the same time? I’m all about it.

I think it becomes a problem when hundreds or thousands of these litter shop windows. At the best of times, it’s a bit difficult to navigate the store page. Over 10,000 games have been released on Steam in 2021.

There are over 3,000 of them on the PlayStation Store.

If Sony’s new policy cuts the shovel and all the great games remain? It suits me just fine too.
