The Kinkara Kava or CUOI D’ORO technique is one of the artistic techniques for making leather products, which consists of tanning, covering with special metal leaves, then creating an embossed pattern using metal molds, and finally dyeing. It is an art of great rarity that was produced for only 300 years, from the period of the Italian Renaissance to just before the Napoleonic Revolution.
This technique was imported to Japan in the mid-17th century and continues to flourish there from the Meiji period (1868–1912) to the Taishō period (1912–1926). CUOI D’ORO adorned many of the walls of European palaces that were torn down and sold as they rebuilt and renovated the buildings. Most of them were bought by the Japanese, cut into small pieces, then converted into bags and other small items, and sold as “KINKARAKAWA” (meaning European golden leather).
KINKARAKAWA has become very popular in Japan. They also discovered the origin of CUOI D’ORO after 50 years of research and analysis, and they were able to reproduce CUOI D’ORO of the same quality or even better.
