Final Fantasy Maker Square Enix Unveils Its First Ethereum NFT Game

After developing and publishing some of the most successful video game franchises of all time, including Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider, Square Enix more and more attention to Web3– and now the Japanese firm has unveiled its first game that will use NFT: Symbiogenesis.

Announced today, the Symbiogenesis project is described as “digital collectible art” based on NFTs artwork that works within the game and can also be used as a social network profile picture (PFP). This is an entirely new franchise for Square Enix and not an extension or spin-off of an existing intellectual property that is tentatively planned to launch. Ethereum spring 2023.

Symbiogenesis is described not as a solid, addictive traditional video game, but as a story-driven web platform with interactive elements. According to the official description, players will take control of their NFT-based character as they “unravel” the mystery by completing missions revolving around questions of monopolization and resource allocation.

NFT is blockchain token this can serve as a document of ownership of a unique item, often digital goods such as works of art, collectibles, and elements of interactive video games. In this case, Square Enix will sell a number of characters as PFP artwork that can also be connected to web games.

Square Enix first showed interest in the Web3 space in early 2019 when President Yosuke Matsuda pointed to blockchain technology as a potential key component of future games. In March 2020 the company led a $2 million investment round in the metaverse game Sandbox.

Square Enix first entered the Web3 space in 2021 by issuing Japan-only NFT “digital stickers” for the anime and video game franchise Million Arthur through the LINE blockchain platform in collaboration with Web3 studio Double Jump.Tokyo. Later that year, the publisher noted growing ambitions in the blockchain spaceincluding NFT-based games.

Earlier this year Square Enix sold a number of franchises (including Tomb Raider) and studios for $300 million, in part to fund further Web3 efforts. Also this year, Square Enix announced plans move the Dungeon Siege franchise to The Sandboxand run NFT bound to collectible Final Fantasy figurines minted on Engin Dottedplatform.

As is the case with other traditional video game publishers and developers entering the Web3 space, such as Ubisoft as well as Team17Square Enix has faced significant fan backlash.

Some gamers have been outspoken against NFTs due to the presence of cryptocurrency scams and the expectation that publishers will use them as a way to get more from players. Critics have also mentioned the environmental impact of Ethereum NFTs, although this complaint was effectively killed over the network recent merge update.

Symbiogenesis is no different, and this morning’s announcement has already been met with grumbling from RPG fans. IP trademark had previously leaked ahead of today’s announcement, and is rumored to be a remake of the popular 1998 game Parasite Eve, or a new installment in the series. Instead, it is a brand new Ethereum NFT game.
